Beth Poole, ADC from the Stonegates Health Center. in Greenville is proud to announce that the residents in Healthcare received first prize in the Festival of Lights of Senior Community Tree Decorating Competition for Delaware Hospice. This was their second year participating, and last year, they were awarded 2nd place. 12 senior centers/facilities participated in this year’s competition. The residents picked their theme and helped put the tree together. They were excited to find out that they raised $137.03 to benefit the Delaware Hospice programs. The votes were tallied by counting pennies contributed by the public. The total amount raised was $685.12. “Way to Go Stonegates Health Center.”

AHCA Announces 2011 National Nursing Home Week Theme And Dates The American Healthcare Association has announced its theme for the 2011 National Nursing Home Week observances: “Fulfilling the Promise.” This year’s theme was selected to honor those who are “Fulfilling the Promise” by serving others, thus adding value to life and helping to overcome many of the infirmities of age and disability. More details are available at www.nnhw.org.
The Veterans History Project The Veterans History Project of the American Folklore Center collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American veterans. Stories can be told through personal narratives, letters, photos, and many other ways. Stories and materials submitted to The Veterans History Project will be archived and housed within the Library of Congress online database and available to Congress and researchers who visit the Library of Congress. For more information, registration and tips for hosting an event in honor of your veterans, visit WWW.loc.gov/vets.
Residents’ Rights Month 2011 Yes, that’s right, RESIDENTS’ RIGHTS MONTH! We are pleased to announce Residents’ Rights Week has been expanded to Residents’ Rights Month. This gives us the entire month of October to call attention to the very important topic of residents’ rights. This is a time for celebration and recognition offering an opportunity for every facility, (including nursing homes, sub acute units, assisted living, board and care and retirement communities. It is a time for celebration of dignity, respect and the value of each individual resident. This year’s theme is “Welcome Home, Creating Connections Between Residents and the Community.” As part of this month’s celebration, the Consumer Voice, (formerly known as NCCNHR,) will carry out a number of activities to raise awareness including the annual call for artwork and other types of feedback from residents about why residents’ rights are important to them. As you know Delaware has held an annual Residents’ Rights Rally for a number of years. This year will be our 10th annual celebration! We have selected the theme…”Through the Years,” and look back on the history of Delaware’s RRR, as well as important historical dates and events that have had an impact on preserving our human, constitutional, civil, and residents’ rights. We are proud to be the “first state” to hold this annual event. Please join us on October 4th at the Dover Sheraton Hotel. Contact Sandy Dole for information.
Meaningful Activities Meaningful activities are activities that are meaningful to the residents/clients for whom we provide services. In order to achieve that goal, we need to focus on completing a comprehensive, all-inclusive history of residents’ life experiences, preferences, traditions, and routines. (Also known as an assessment.) Gone are the days when we as activity professionals would sit down with our staff to decide what we going to put on the next month’s calendar. The OBRA regulations require us to “know each person.” (These regulations of course are for skilled nursing facilities, but the same principles should follow for all settings including ALF, Adult Day, etc.) “Knowing each person,” is a good rule to follow in all the settings where we provide services. In order to maximize the success of programming we need to “reach out” to our professional colleagues for creative ways to maximize the services that we provide. In the “not so good old days” we used to protect our “sources” from our co-professionals which limited everyone’s ability to provide a wide range of programming. “Brain Storming” is a great way to increase our knowledge, share ideas for resources, and provide the best possible programming for our residents and clients. Cooperative activities can also help us stretch our budgets, create new programs, and increase community involvement. A future DCAP continuing education program may offer such an opportunity, and give our members a chance to expand their list of resources as well as to share issues and concerns about potential negative outcomes.
